Martin Shkreli is the new face of evil. Pharmaceutical companies have long been considered the evil empire, many of the family owned empires themselves are some of the richest families in the world. But Shkreli finally added a face to the name. And he did so in a seemingly smug way. First, he raised the price of a decades old life saving drug. Next, he went on interviews and professed his right to do so, showing not one ounce of
remorse over the matter. And of course, he tweeted (don’t bother, he locked down his twitter account this morning). But now the situation has grown far worse for Shkreli, as the Feds are locking in on him for past transgressions.

According to Newsweek.
The criminal investigation involves Retrophin, a public company where Shkreli served as an officer, director, and 10-percent owner of the outstanding stock before being ousted amid multiple allegations of misconduct. Retrophin focuses on the development, acquisition and commercialization of therapies for the treatment of catastrophic or rare diseases, and was founded by in 2011 by Shkreli.

The inquiry, according to court records and people with knowledge of the inquiry, involves such a vast number of suspected crimes it is difficult to know where to start. A quick summary of the government’s theory: If there was money, Shkreli took it. If there were facts to be revealed, Shkreli hid them. If there were securities laws, Shkreli broke them.

One would have to question why someone participating in alleged criminal activity would inherently go to great depths to further screw themselves. But that’s exactly what happened here. If you are participating in white collar criminal activity, it is probably best to not insert yourself as a debate point amongst presidential candidates. He could have, at any point, dropped the price back down to where it was before to kill the story. He could have avoided smug interview opportunities and insensitive tweets. He did everything possible to take the wrong course of action and now it seems he may end up paying for that.
