A German study involving over 25,000 children reveals that major negative impacts on the physical, psychological, and behavioral health of children may be far more widespread than reported in the media and by government officials -- affecting approximately 68% and contributing to 24 distinct health complaints, according to parent submitted observations. 

 

A concerning study conducted in Germany has been posted online as a preprint (not yet peer-reviewed) titled, “Corona children studies "Co-Ki": First results of a Germany-wide registry on mouth and nose covering (mask) in children,” describing the results of 17,854 parent submitted reports on health complaints or impairments experienced as a result of wearing masks by their 25,930 children.

 

The study was designed to both explore the accumulating narratives reported by parents, educators, and doctors about increasing problems and health complaints in children and adolescents wearinng masks, as well as to provide the first known online registry where parents, doctors, teachers, and others can enter their first-hand observations. New program to pinpoint "extremist" students through keyword analysis

Schools throughout the United Kingdom are being provided new surveillance software aimed at detecting “extremist” students.

The program, designed by UK-based Impero Software, assists schools in building threat profiles on individual students by utilizing real-time electronic monitoring.

Installed on school laptops and tablets, the software uses keyword search capabilities and URL monitoring to detect the use of “terrorism-related” words or phrases, allowing teachers to examine suspicious behavior patterns among students.

“Protecting young people from the dangers of radicalization requires positive online counter-extremism, and empowering teachers with technology like Impero’s keyword library is an important part of this process,” Jonathan Russell, a software developer, told the BBC.

According to Impero Software employee Sally-Ann Griffiths, the keyword library gives schools the ability to stay up-to-date with the latest jihadist terms. 

“By defining terms such as ‘yodo’, a phrase used by jihadist sympathisers meaning ‘you only die once’, the glossary gives teachers, who are part of the solution to the problem, the tools they need to identify, intervene and safeguard at-risk pupils,” Griffiths said. 

The software’s implementation follows the February passage of the Counter Terrorism and Security Act, a law, which among other things, tasks educators with preventing the radicalization of schoolchildren. 

Teachers across the country have argued that the law places “an unlawful and unenforceable duty on educational institutions and staff,” turning teachers into spies in their own classrooms. 

“The best response to acts of terror against UK civilians is to maintain and defend an open, democratic society in which discriminatory behavior of any kind is effectively challenged,” the Guardian wrote. “Draconian crackdowns on the rights of academics and students will not achieve the ends the government says it seeks.” 

The law also raises questions given the ever-expanding definition of “terrorist,” which is increasingly being applied to peaceful political activists. 

Similar systems are being adopted by education centers in the United States as well, with some schools even looking into “biometric classroom” programs that monitor individual eye movements, facial expressions and conversations.

Tony Blair was, mind-stretchingly, presented with Save the Children’s Global Legacy Award, on 19th November 2014. His acceptance speech included that his: “… sense is that amidst all the challenges, and all the misery and deprivation that we seek to conquer and vanquish, there is something hopeful … something to be thankful for.” 

Ironically, just two months earlier (15th August 2014) Save the Children released a Report (1) on the on the trauma amongst Iraq’s children in Northern Iraq alone, after eleven years of a Bush-Blair driven illegal invasion and ongoing resultant conflict. Iraq’s children, it was clear, had no hope and nothing “to be thankful for.” 

Yet Blair was lauded by an organization that claims: “We envision a future in which no child will die from preventable causes and where every child has nutritious food and clean water.” 

Without Blair’s claims of fantasy WMDs with which Iraq could wreak annihilation in “45 minutes”, a lie quoted by General Colin Powell at the United Nations exactly twelve years ago, 5th February 2003, for the children of Iraq a genocidal “preventable cause” might have been avoided. 

“Nutritious food and clean water”, had, of course, been deliberately destroyed on US Central Command’s order to bomb all water facilities in Iraq in 1991. Food was poisoned by the use of Depleted Uranium (DU) weapons, contaminating all fauna and flora. DU’s “half-life” is 4.5 Billion years. And it is not “depleted.” 

The contamination nightmare was compounded in orders of magnitude by the further use of DU weapons in 2003, used again by the UK under Blair’s government. (2) 

Befoulment of air, water and food for infinity condemns future generations of unborn, newborn and developing children in Iraq and the region to a poisoned legacy of cancers and deformities for generations to come. War crimes unequalled in history.

Television damages brain structure of children

Watching too much television can actually cause harmful changes to a child’s brain structure, according to a study conducted by researchers from Tohoku University in Japan and published in the journal Cerebral Cortex. The more television watched, the more severe the changes.

“TV viewing is directly or indirectly associated with the neurocognitive development of children,” the researchers wrote. “At least some of the observed associations are not beneficial and guardians of children should consider these effects when children view TV for long periods of time.”

The researchers conducted magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans on the brains of 276 children between the ages of five and 18, evenly split between girls and boys. The children and their caregivers provided detailed information about how much time each child spent watching television per day. The amount of television viewed varied between zero and four hours per day, averaging about two.

TV-viewing brains are less developed

The researchers found that the more time that children spent watching television, the more gray matter that they had in the region at the anterior of the frontal lobe known as the frontopolar cortex. And while this might sound like a good thing, higher IQs and higher verbal intelligence have actually been linked with a thinner frontopolar cortex both in this study and in prior ones.

“These areas show developmental cortical thinning during development, and children with superior IQs show the most vigorous cortical thinning in this area,” the researchers wrote.

The neurological changes associated with television viewing were the same in boys and girls, the researchers found.

“These anatomical correlates may be linked to previously known effects of TV viewing on verbal competence, aggression, and physical activity,” the researchers speculated. “In particular, the present results showed effects of TV viewing on the frontopolar area of the brain, which has been associated with intellectual abilities.”

Read a book instead

Numerous studies have established that TV viewing can have harmful effects on children, particularly on the very young. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that children under the age of two not be allowed to watch any television at all, and that older children be limited to a maximum of two hours per day.

According to the researchers, the study is the first to examine the effect of television on the brain’s “structural development.” Because of the study design, it is also unclear whether television viewing led directly to the observed brain changes, or whether the changes came from related factors such as less time spent engaging in social or physical activities.

The researchers speculated that part of the problem of television might be that, in contrast with activities such as learning to play a musical instrument, television viewing offers no variety in pace or complexity.

“When this type of increase in level of experience does not occur with increasing experience, there is less of an effect on cognitive functioning,” they wrote.

Meanwhile, a separate study, conducted recently by researchers from Emory University, found that college students who read the novel Pompeii by Robert Harris showed increased conductivity in regions of the brain associated with language receptivity. These neurological changes began on the first day of reading and lasted for five days after completion of the book.

“It remains an open question how long these neural changes might last,” researcher Gregory Berns said. “But the fact that we’re detecting them over a few days for a randomly assigned novel suggests that your favorite novels could certainly have a bigger and longer-lasting effect on the biology of your brain.”

Around 3.6 million children are currently growing up in relative poverty in Britain, compared to 2 million recorded in 1969, a new study shows.

According to a report seen by The Guardian, child poverty is now a bigger problem than during the 1960s and Britain is at risk of becoming a place where rich and poor children live in separate, parallel worlds.

The report, which will be released by the National Children's Bureau next week to mark the charity’s 50th anniversary, also warned that child poverty in the UK is causing “social apartheid”.

“Our analysis shows that despite some improvements, the inequality and disadvantage suffered by poorer children 50 years ago still persists today,” said Hilary Emery, the charity’s chief executive.

The study’s findings also suggested that the British government’s efforts to fight against childhood poverty had been falling short and “politicians need to be more ambitious”.

Earlier in June, figures released by the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) revealed that at least one in six children in Britain lives in relative poverty.

In 2011-12, 2.3 million or 17 percent of UK children were recorded as “living in homes with substantially lower than average income”. The figure rises to 3.5 million or 27 percent when housing costs are deducted from incomes.

Children are considered to be in relative poverty when their families’ income is below 60 percent of the median after housing costs have been factored in.
