The Italian government has decided to send two military vessels to the Strait of Hormuz, officially for mine clearance, even without a UN mandate. As these vessels would be operating in a war zone, including within Iranian territorial waters, if they were threatened or attacked by Iranian forces, they would be supported by Italian Navy strike units, officially “for protective purposes.”
