Little, if anything, about the peace agreement signed last weekend in Qatar makes sense. It calls for a phased, fourteen-month withdrawal of 12,000 US troops in exchange for what the New York Times called “vague” commitments on the Taliban’s part to protect the civil liberties, the very idea of which is ludicrous. It requires the Taliban to combat Al Qaeda and other terrorist groups operations even though Taliban military commander Sirajuddin Haqqani heads a subgroup known as the Haqqani Network that is itself on the State Department’s list of officially proscribed terrorist organizations.
By Rep. Ron Paul, January 28, 2020 You wouldn’t know it from US mainstream media reporting, but on Friday an estimated million Iraqis took to the streets to protest the continued US military presence in their country. What little mainstream media coverage the protest received all reported the number of protesters as far less than actually turned out. The Beltway elites are determined that Americans not know or understand just how much our presence in Iraq is not wanted.
The US Dropped More Munitions on Afghanistan Last Year Than Any Other Time in the Last Decade By Jared Keller, January 28, 2020 The U.S. military dropped more munitions on targets across Afghanistan in 2019 than during any other year stretching back to at least 2009, according to Air Force data. According to Air Forces Central Command’s airpower statistics, U.S. aircraft dropped 7,423 munitions across 2,434 sorties as part of Operation Freedom’s Sentinel and NATO’s Resolute Support mission, and increase over the 7,362 weapons released across 966 sorties in 2018.
Trump Escalates Confrontation over Federal Shutdown By Patrick Martin With the partial shutdown of the federal government in its third week, and 800,000 workers facing the prospect of a payless payday Friday, President Trump has stepped up his campaign to spread fear and whip up bigotry against immigrants and refugees. In an era of media distortion, our emphasis has been on the “unspoken truth”. To maintain our independence, we do not seek foundation funding and elite philanthropic sponsorship, which invariably contribute to setting limits on the scope and focus of media reporting.
We therefore largely rely on contributions from our readers. You can help us by forwarding our articles far and wide as a means of battling alternative media censorship.

The occasion for the flag display was the visit of US lieutenant-general Frederick Hodges, commander of US forces in Europe, who arrived on a special mission, ostensibly to commend the performance of Georgian troops who were undergoing combat training at the US military base in Oberpfalz, in Germany.
Do not underestimate the capacity of the US to maintain its “superpower” status. It is committed to exhaust whatever means to achieve its ends. From its unsolicited military intervention in Syria to economic sanctions imposed in Russia and Cuba, Global Research brings to your attention the following articles on US international relations.
The global media — to their credit – are focusing on the brutality of the US-backed Raqqa campaign, though they’re avoiding any serious reporting about how and why the Kurds are ethnically cleansing Arabs from Raqqa. (Andrew Korybko)
Combined with the heavy and indiscriminate airstrikes being carried out against the city, 160,000 civilians have been forced to become refugees and flee their homes as internally displaced people. This works out to more than half of the city’s pre-war population of 220,000, and it confirms what independent journalist and associate editor at 21stcenturywire.com Vanessa Beeley told RT just recently about how the US is making no attempt whatsoever to protect civilians.
Although diplomatic relations – re-established on July 20, 2015 – will continue, the new actions of the Trump administration are a step backwards towards the normalization of bilateral ties, and come loaded with old anti-Cuban rhetoric.
Democracy no longer exists in the West. In the US powerful private interest groups, such as the military-security complex, Wall Street, the Israel Lobby, agribusiness and the extractive industries of energy, timber and mining, have long exercised more control over government than the people. But now even the semblance of democracy has been abandoned.
Unlike their predecessors, early 21st century missionaries do not come armed with bibles. They come as members of a scientific priesthood, spouting slick PR and are supported by the likes of Bill Gates, taxpayer ‘aid’ and the global agritech cartel and rely on the leverage of international institutions like the World Bank, IMF and WTO.
Over the past fifty plus years, over 125 mass shootings/massacres have occurred within the United States but not one perpetrator has been identified as a trained member of an international Islamist terrorist organization.
“I want to go on record as saying that this is the stupidest, most irresponsible action a diplomatic mission like ours could get itself involved in, and that we’ve started a series of these things that will never end.” Dean Hinton, US State Department official pertaining to planned CIA coup against Syria in 1949.
The US war in Afghanistan produced at least 11,000 civilian casualties last year, setting a new official record, according to a report by the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan.

Recently I worked in another Maine city and was astonished at the
number of patients I encountered who were using heroin. I had never
seen anything like it, during a lifetime practicing medicine. In New Hampshire, it was said, deaths from heroin now exceed deaths from car accidents. Nationwide, CDC noted,“Between
2002 and 2013, the rate of heroin-related overdose deaths nearly
quadrupled, and more than 8,200 people died in 2013.” Massachusetts (population under 7 million) had 1,000 deaths related to (all) opioids in 2014, “the highest ever recorded.“
I’ve heard stories on NPR about insufficient state funding of heroin treatment facilities. I’ve heard about plans to make Narcan injections available to iv drug users, for overdoses. Another popular angle I’ve seen repeated multiple times (and one currently pushed by the US Drug Enforcement Agency) claims prescription narcotics became harder to get, so users switched to heroin, instead.

The Islamic State is destroying opium fields in Afghanistan as it routs the Taliban, according to witnesses.
The reports may ultimately result in the US sending troops back into
the country to protect these valuable and highly lucrative assets.
CIA and Afghan Opium
In 2009 it was reported that the CIA controlled the opium trade in Afghanistan through Ahmed Wali Karzai,
the brother of the former president, Hamid Karzai, who began his career
as a fundraiser for the CIA’s mujahideen during the 1980s.
“CIA-supported Mujahideen rebels engaged heavily in drug trafficking
while fighting against the Soviet-supported government and its plans to
reform the very backward Afghan society,” William Blum writes in The Real Drug Lords.
“The Golden Crescent drug trade, launched by the CIA in the early
1980s, continues to be protected by US
The USA started carrying out coups, assassinating leaders, and
sponsoring terrorism and extremists in Syria in 1948, continuing to the
present moment, as everyone knows, under Obama. Examples, provided by David North:
“The Eisenhower administration was troubled by the popularity of the
“progressive front,” which was backed by elements in the Syrian army
led by Colonel Adnan Malki. The United States was particularly angry
that Malki’s faction opposed Syrian membership in the anti-Soviet
Baghdad Pact, modeled on NATO, which the Eisenhower administration set
up in January 1955. On April 22, 1955, Malki was assassinated while
attending a soccer match by a member of the pro-US and right-wing Syrian
Social National Party. An official investigation into the assassination
found that the US was a major supporter and financier of the SSNP. It
was well known that the SSNP had close ties with the CIA.”
“Working closely with its counterparts in British intelligence, the
CIA and the British SIS developed Operation Straggle. In what appears
today to be an early model of the present US-orchestrated “rebel”
insurgency [in Syria]:”
“The original CIA-SIS plan appears to have called for Turkey to
stage border incidents, British operatives to stir up the desert tribes,
and American agents to mobilize SSNP guerillas, all of which would
trigger a pro-Western coup by “indigenous anticommunist elements within
Syria” supported, if necessary, by Iraqi troops. What Washington
perceived as a deteriorating situation in Damascus made Straggle more
and more attractive. [Little, p. 66]“
“The coup planned by the CIA was scheduled to take place on October
25, 1956. The CIA had provided $150,000 to the conspirators.”
Dr. Noam Chomsky notes (and here):
“The US at that time had three major crisis areas, according to the
internal discussions, all in Islamic countries, all in oil-producers.
One was Indonesia, one was Algeria, one was basically Iraq — the Iraqi
region. Those were the three crises. It was made explicit in the
internal meetings. In fact, Eisenhower, vociferously, according to the
minutes, insisted on this: there was no Russian involvement. The enemy
is indigenous nationalism. In fact, that’s true throughout the Cold War,
but very explicit then, and Eisenhower did discuss it with his staff…”
The USA’s sponsorship of terrorism in Syria and everywhere in the
Mid East and globally was maintained with complete continuity after the
fall of the Soviet Union, exhibiting how much that empty pretext was
worth. Pretexts will always be updated to pacify an uninformed public
into accepting elite marauding and plunder, and even get them to naively
cheer it on.
