Outrageous! U.S. government says verdict in Bayer Roundup court case should be reversed

Sacramento, CA — California just dealt Monsanto a blow as the state’s Environmental Protection Agency will now list glyphosate — the toxic main ingredient in the U.S.’ best-selling weedkiller, Roundup — as known to cause cancer.

Under the Safe Drinking Water and Toxic Enforcement Act of 1986 — usually referred to as Proposition 65, its original name — chemicals that cause cancer, birth defects, or other reproductive harm are required to be listed and published by the state. Chemicals also end up on the list if found to be carcinogenic by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) — a branch of the World Health Organization.

In March, the IARC released a report that found glyphosate to be a “probable carcinogen.”

Will GMOs ever be banned? And if so, how will it happen? These are the questions that I am asked by thousands of concerned eaters on a routine basis. They are great questions, and ones that require a bit of explanation to truly ‘answer.’ As part of a new Q&A video series, I delve into the question and detail the factors that are required for Monsanto’s GMOs to hit the ‘ban’ list in the United States. 

In order to delve into the possibility of a full-fledged ‘ban’ on GMOs, of which biotech juggernaut owns 90% of the GMO seed market, we first need to establish a limit or ban on Monsanto’s Roundup — a glyphosate-based herbicide that we already know is linked to cancer. Even the World Health Organization has now joined us in declaring that Roundup is, in fact, generating disease through the contamination of the water supply and general use. 

Already, other countries and international retailers have begun limiting the sale of Roundup amid the reports. One of the most recent and most notable bans was just announced by the French government, which has banned the weedkiller from its garden centers. As The Independent tells us: 

“France has announced a ban on over the counter sales of a brand of weedkiller from garden centres after the active ingredient was classified as “probably carcinogenic to humans” by the UN.

The UN’s International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) classified glyphosate in March as “probably carcinogenic to humans,” and is the active ingredient in Roundup.”

Truly, the precedent has now been set. Now, if we can take this action inside the borders of the United States, we can set a precedent. A precedent that Monsanto’s creations are in fact inflicting disease upon the public. Then, we go further, and prove that the company knew of these effects before or during the sale of Roundup. Then, we have something to really help make way for the ban of Monsanto’s GMO seeds. 

Because if we can show that Monsanto has no problem launching a product that has been linked to cancer by an independent scientific agency, then we can demonstrate that its GMOs and other products should certainly not be trusted. Then, maybe the USDA won’t be able to give them special ‘speedy approval’ and dismiss its safety testing.

Alleged Glyphosate Poisoning Kills 2 Children, 33 More in Hospital

Local doctors in the Canindeyú region of Paraguay are alleging that the use of the toxic herbicide glyphosate on soybean crops has caused the death of two children, and put 33 more in the hospital.

Two children (ages 3-yrs, and 6 mos.) from the same family suddenly died last week, one en route to the hospital, another just after being released due to a poisoning outbreak of glyphosate in the Huber Duré settlement. Their bodies have been sent to the capital of Paraguay, Asunción, for detailed autopsies which could confirm that glyphosate was the cause of death.

Government officials are trying to rule out herbicide poisoning; however, even before the autopsies are completed. They instead are blaming the children’s deaths, and the 33 additional illnesses, on a respiratory virus.

Marcial Gomez, leader of the National Peasant Federation, reported that the first symptoms were a high fever, and doctors in the area have not provided the correct level of care.

Gomez believes that the children lived very near vast fields of soybean crops that were sprayed with ‘a powerful herbicide’ to kill off the weeds before farmers planted, and this is what led to their deaths.

“The expansion of GM soy monocultures and their dependency on a single herbicide have created increased tolerance and/or resistance among pest populations, resulting in the need to increase the quantities applied per unit of surface and the need to apply other herbicides. This has caused a threefold increase in the import of agrochemicals in to Paraguay over the past years.

At their first prenatal appointment, pregnant women are doled out a list of NO's including deli meats, fish, and unpasteurized cheese. Even a recent, bold pronouncement by the Royal College of Obstetrics and Gynecology, attempted to sound the alarm about chemical exposures with recommendations for "unproven" but potentially harmful exposures. They describe the importance of considering chemicals in personal care products, over-the-counter medications and supplements, metals and industrial pollutants in fish, and pesticides. However, they dilute their message by making statements such as "Realistically, pesticides are so rigorously regulated that human exposure via food residues is usually minimal, even in non–organic products."
Unfortunately, the concept of "dose makes the poison" is no longer operative in a world of multiple, synergistic chemical exposures, the toxicity of which appears to be contingent upon each individual's endocrine and immune system.
The limitations of human resilience are revealed in the vulnerability of a growing fetus. A mystically orchestrated process, conception, embryogenesies, and the interplay of an incalculably vast number of variables defies our ability to comprehend how these "instructions" could be folded into two cells, the egg and the sperm.
The study of epigenetics, or the environmental influence on genetic expression, has given us a keyhole look into this vast room of fetal development. We have learned that availability of nutrients, presence of stress hormones, and even beneficial bacteria all contribute to optimal expression of fetal genes. This expression is relevant not just for the proper growth of fingers and toes, but for the long-term health of the offspring. This concept is called the fetal origins of adult disease, and has helped to elucidate the early underpinnings of chronic diseases like cancer and obesity. To date, toxicologists are ill-equipped to assess for these long-term epigenetic effects, but animal studies are revealing transgenerational inheritance of pesticide-induced defects.

De acuerdo a un análisis, “si estuvieras respirando en el aire de muestra, estarías inhalando 2.5 nanogramas de glifosato por metro cúbico de aire. Se ha estimado que una persona adulta promedio inhala aproximadamente 388 pies cúbicos u 11 metros cúbicos de aire por día, lo que equivaldría a 27.5 nanogramas de glifosato al día.”

3) De acuerdo con un reporte del mes pasado, la USDA ha determinado que el uso de OGMs ha incrementado el uso de pesticidas y herbicidas. Aunque la USDA es conocida por favorecer los OGM, el reporte confirma lo que los científicos independientes han estado diciendo todo el tiempo: La modificación genética no lleva a un incremento de ganancias. Dado que existe una relación incestuosa entre la agencia y Monsanto, ahora se están formulando preguntas relativas a las aseveraciones no científicas y no probadas de la industria biotecnológica, en el sentido de que la biotecnología no es el camino hacia el futuro.

4)Investigación BioMédica Internacional confirmó lo que muchos han pensado por un largo tiempo: los pesticidas son mucho más peligrosos de lo que se pensaba originalmente. Los científicos en la Universidad de Caen examinaron ocho productos comerciales, incluyendo al Roundup, y descubrieron que nueve de ellos fueron cientos de veces más tóxicos que su ingrediente activo por sí solo. Así que no sólo nos debemos preocupar por los químicos tóxicos en los pesticidas, sino también de su interacción con otros químicos tóxicos. El Roundup de Monsanto fue el más tóxico.

5) Un estudio de diciembre de la Comisión de las Naciones Unidas en Desarrollo e Intercambio titulado: Despierta antes de que sea demasiado tarde, advirtió que la agricultura orgánica y a pequeña escala es la única forma de alimentar al mundo. El reporte contiene – secciones sobre la necesidad de cambio a una agricultura más sustentable y resistente: la producción de ganado y el cambio climático; la importancia de la investigación y expansión; el rol del uso de la tierra y de reformar las reglas de intercambio global. Más de 60 expertos del mundo contribuyeron al reporte.

En diciembre, más de 200 científicos acusaron a la industria biotecnológica de mentir sobre la seguridad de los OGM. Eso junto con los cinco estudios recientes citados anteriormente, lo que constituye una pila de evidencia que señala los peligros del uso de pesticidas, así como el daño que causan los OGMs.

¿Cuándo dejaran la FDA, USDA y la EPA de apoyar a una industria señalada por científicos de todas partes y van a empezar a hacer su trabajo? La salud pública debe estar antes que la ganancia corporativa.
