As far as historical accounts go, this particular piece about America's entry in World War I, submitted to Sulzberger's Slimes by Georgetown University History Professor and "noted author" Michael Kazin (cough cough), isn't so bad. Nonetheless, in spite of its relative objectivity, some important elements are missing. The "Editorial Board" of The Anti-New York Times is pleased to add a bit of much-needed muscle to this skeletal narrative. 

The "distinguished" Professor Kazin from Georgetown only gets it half-right. The B-student party-boy from Rutgers gets it 100%. (Yet Kazin rakes in millions of dollars while we have to plead for donations and book sales! (hint-hint) Go figure.

Kazin: In 1917, Congress voted to enter what was then the largest and bloodiest war in history. Four days earlier, President Woodrow Wilson had sought to unite a sharply divided populace with a stirring claim that the nation “is privileged to spend her blood and her might for the principles that gave her birth and happiness and the peace which she has treasured.”

THE SETTING

Hoping to draw the United States into the "Great War" (World War I), British Lord of the Admiralty Winston Churchill had, in May, 1915, engineered the sinking of The Lusitania. As the munitions-laden liner approached British waters, the British Mad Dog called off the ship's escorts so that a German U-boat could torpedo the sitting duck. About 1,200 passengers and crew were killed, including about 100 Americans. Needless to say, the doomed passengers knew nothing of the explosive contraband that was being secretly transported from New York to London.

But it was not yet time for America to enter the brutal war. Most Americans know November 11 as "Veterans Day" -- the day we honor the poor chumps who have "died for our freedom" (barf), as well as the living ones who knew not and know not of the dark powers that misuse the Department of Offense. We do not intend that in any way as an insult to our vets -- but that is the tragic historical reality of the situation, whether one can handle the truth or not. 

But what few people know is that the date originated as, and still coincides with "Armistice Day" -- commemorated every year to mark the armistice signed between the Allies of World War I and Germany in a railway carriage at Compiègne, France. This year's remembrance is extra-special because it is a centennial observation.

Make a mental note of the famous railway carriage of 11-11-1918. It is where Germany was tricked into capitulating, triggering celebrations throughout France, the U.K. and the U.S.

The official cessation of hostilities on the Western Front of World War I took effect at eleven o'clock in the morning -- the "eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month" ... 11-11-11 of 1918.
