New Study Shows Depth of Commercial Influence

Professional education events are heavily sponsored by drug companies promoting their products as the solution. This widely used coercive and misinformation technique where drug risks are exaggerated and side effects minimized was exposed in a recent BMJ Open study. 

The online medical journal BMJ Open recently published a retrospective cohort study titled Does industry-sponsored education foster overdiagnosis and overtreatment of depression, osteoporosis and over­active bladder syndrome? An Australian cohort study. Looking at publicly reported industry-sponsored events in Australia from October 2011 to September 2015, the researchers focused on three conditions subject to over diagnosis and over treatment: depression, osteoporosis and overactive bladder.

Over the 4-year study period 3,132 events were identified consisting of approximately 96,660

In 2011, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) began a program to entice doctors and hospitals to incorporate the use of Electronic Health Records or EHR. The carrot? The promise of convenience, coordinated care, fewer medical errors, more efficient office visits, improved access to medical records. Oh yeah, and they were told, “If you want to get paid, you must convert and bill electronically.”

The EHR programs were costly. The setup and implementation fees, which could be $30,000 or more, were required for each physician in a practice. Therefore, the government offered two incentive programs to encourage participation. The Medicare EHR Incentive Program offered to pay up to $44,000 over 5 years to cover the cost to implement a specific type of EHR, one that was certified to store and easily transfer structured data. The Medicaid EHR Incentive Program, offered to pay up to $63,750 over six years. In exchange, providers had to prove they were using the EHRs in a “meaningful way,” now simply referred to as “meaningful use”, or MU.

To date, at least 400,000 providers have adopted EHRs and are “meaningfully using” them. The sheer cost of the mandate, even with the incentives, forced many doctors to leave private practice and become hospital employees. They are now told how to practice medicine by administrators, insurance

Dr. Irvin Sahni: The bottom line is this. Doctors are incentivized the wrong way in my opinion; they’re incentivized the wrong way. So if you believe that the goal is to prevent disease to begin with rather than just simply treat it once it occurs. In other words, if you believe that being proactive is more important than being reactive, then you would agree with what I’m about to say.

If I see a patient who has Medicare, just because so many doctors see Medicare and the fee schedule is constant, I will bill Medicare based on certain variables. And some of those—it’s very complicated, of course, just like the tax code is very complicated.

But to simplify, there’s two very commonly used codes: it’s a 99213 and a 99214. A 99213 is just an evaluation visit, an existing patient I’ve been seeing them for years. And when he comes in I can bill a 992—a 12345, okay, almost never a one, almost never a five, things usually lay in the middle depending on what kind of doctor you are and how sick your patients are.

But an average, normal person comes in and I’m going to bill Medicare. If I bill Medicare at 99213 in Texas right now you get about 40 bucks. If I bill Medicare a 99214 I get about a 100 dollars – pretty big spread there. Sixty dollars is quite a bit. So if there’s something you could do to get an extra 60 dollars you’re going to do it.

One way I can convert a 99213 to a—it’s not totally simple. You have to have asked a lot of other questions, but the bottom line is at the very end you have to show medical decision making. It’s called medical decision making.

So I can sit there and ask a bazillion questions. But if I just say “take an aspirin” and I’ll never see

You take a typical medical doctor who goes through a decade of school. How many courses do they typically take in nutrition? The answer is at most one and it’s not really a course, it’s a one-day mini whatever you would call it: a two-hour sit down and they don’t even really go into nutrition. They go into the ways that certain vitamins affect your body, your enzymes, but that’s it. That’s it!
One of my good friends is a physician in San Antonio. He said that he went to school for 12 years. Twelve years! He had two literal hours on a Wednesday afternoon for nutrition and that’s it. So, the reason that your doctor does not tell you about the effects of nutrition on your health or about the effects of nutrition on cancer is that he or she doesn’t know it.

This rules out "contamination" (as the official claim goes) because with vaccines proven to cause autism now, it is obvious that an incident involving serious and immediate neurological problems would just be a test run of a souped up version of the autism vaccine that "protects you against the possibility of future intelligence". After Killing Infant with 8 Simultaneous Vaccinations

It must have been shame that drove doctors at a California hospital to hide the body of an infant who had suddenly died after receiving eight simultaneous vaccinations. The parents were never allowed to see the body of their son before he was cremated. Even after a year and four months had gone by, the official autopsy had not been revealed. Their son, Matthew, had been given DTaP, IPV, Hib, PCV, Hep B and Hep A in three shots, one in the right arm and two in the left leg, just a day before his sudden death.

According to mother Crystal Downing, Mathew became grumpy and cried a lot the day after receiving the eight inoculations. She thought this was normal behavior following vaccination.
