After bowing to Russian pressure to not attack Syria, Turkish President Erdogan rejects the European Union and turns towards the Russia-China Trading Bloc instead (Shangai Cooperation Organization). Erdogan states:

“If we get into the SCO, we will say good-bye to the European Union. The SCO — much more powerful. Pakistan wants in. India wants in as well. If the SCO wants us, all of us will become members of this organization.” (here)

Brazil had already rejected the Globalist Free Trade Area of the Americas (FTAA), and joined Putin's BRIC trading bloc instead (along with India & China).

Then, in rejecting US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton's call for sanctions against Iran, Brazil's Foreign Minister Celso Amorim held his ground firmly; stating to her publicly:

How WikiLeaks, ‘Anonymous’ etc are merely new forms of an old problem

Throughout early 2011, the European liberal left were in a frenzy over the ‘Arab Spring’ uprisings that were sweeping across the region. The Mainstream Media supplied around the clock coverage of the mass demonstrations in Tahrir Square as we were told that the people of the Arab world were standing up to tyranny and demanding the democratic freedoms and human rights that are held in such high esteem in the west.

However, this hysteria took a dark turn in February and March of that year when armed gangs managed to take control of Benghazi in Libya and everyone from FOX News to far left political organizations immediately began to hail these events as part of some progressive revolution. In London, demonstrations began to break out in support of these rebel groups and members of the Socialist Workers Party even scaled the walls of the Libyan Embassy and replaced the Libyan flag with that of the King Idris flag which represented the Benghazi rebels.

Its incredibly problematic when organisations in the west feel they not only have a right to attach themselves to developments and struggles throughout the third world but that they can instinctively and egotistically act on them. This type of behavior rarely considers the importance of contextualization and takes sides in such conflicts depending on which narrative fits their romantic notions of ‘global revolution’ and which version their newly assumed role would sit more comfortable with. Wikileaks and Anonymous for instance, despite being relatively new organisations, are merely a new form of such behavior.

The problem is that most of these groups in the west are based on the liberal ideas of individualism and human rights formed in more privileged societies that exist in comfort at the expense of oppressed nations. Whilst following a neo-colonial agenda, countries such as the United States and the United Kingdom are able to portray themselves as progressive, philanthropic nations delivering democracy, aid and human rights to poorer nations and their apparent protection and tolerance of such free and democratic values amongst their own populations only serve to support such claims. The type of dissent that these organisations represent and attempt to address are always with regards to ‘authoritarianism’, ‘libertarianism’, ‘freedom of expression’ and ‘democratic rights’ that merely frame the issue to the extent that the rights and injustices that are at the center of third world struggles go largely ignored. Whistleblowing in this sense serves the same purpose as the publishing of political memoirs, or the occasional negative self reflection of the press on past events that are always too little, too late. They do not hold any real clout to make a difference politically yet serve the notions that “dissent” is tolerated, and published in the west.

In 2012, Wikileaks released 2.4 million emails that showed correspondence between political figures, ministeries and associated companies in Syria from between 2006 and 2012. Sarah Harrison of the Associated Press claimed that the

“material is embarrassing to Syria” but claims that Syria’s opponents will equally be ashamed. “It helps us not merely to criticize one group or another, but to understand their interests, actions and thoughts. It is only through understanding this conflict that we can hope to resolve it.”

The problem with such action from Wikileaks is how it completely failed to take into account the already established campaign by western governments and media outlets to slander Bashar Al Assad’s government in Syria and how this could, and would be used to give support and legitimacy to their claims. When the most powerful country in the world with the most powerful media agencies at its disposal are targeting Syria, slandering its government and constantly pushing for “Humanitarian Intervention”, this irresponsible lack of contextualization can only serve Syria’s enemies.

For instance, the emails revealed arms trading between Russia and Syria despite the UN(under pressure from the US) imposing sanctions on the country. These leaked documents were then used by the Mainstream Media to support Hilary Clinton’s claims that Russia were blocking their resolutions at the UN Security Council based on a desire to continue to sell weapons to Syria. However, no mention was obviously made of the high tech weapons and support given to the Free Syria Army by western nations or the Saudi and Qatari mercenaries at the heart of their struggle, nor did it mention Russia’s reservations that the same scenario had led to the deaths of tens of thousands of Libyans less than a year earlier.

Wikileaks and Julian Assange, as a figure who is no stranger to the power of media propaganda certainly know how dangerously convenient these actions are to those conducting war against Syria and this irresponsible conduct as if Syrians are struggling on a level playing field and that Wikileaks have a right, or even a responsibility to act in such a way is incredibly damaging.

In a similar fashion this week, Anonymous claimed that it was conducting a Cyber War against the Syrian government in response to an ‘internet blackout’ in the country. Despite the Syrian Minister of Information making a statement that they had nothing to do with the blackout, Anonymous took to twitter and claimed that

“Government of Syria cuts country’s internet access – anonymous goes on warpath.”

They started removing all the Syrian government’s internet properties that remained online and also targeted domains ran by pro-government sympathizers. Some of the Syrian organizations and companies that have been hacked by Anonymous include Syrian Railways, the Syrian parliament, Syrian TV and the Syrian Embassy in China. Anonymous took to Twitter again to naively state that

“”Anonymous is attacking Assad due to the internet outage. Anonymous is not attacking Assad in support of the Free Syrian Army. #OpSyria.”

Now, this idea that they can attack Assad in response to an ‘internet outage’ without supporting Assad’s enemies is almost laughable and typical of the age old liberal idea that their universal values and liberal ideas of human rights take precedence over the struggle itself which real people are fighting, and dying for. This idea of freedom of expression and that an issue of cutting Internet Access(even though the Syrian government have denied they have done this) is of more importance than contextualizing the struggle into a government and its people responding to terrorist organizations and foreign mercenaries, funded, supported and armed from abroad shows how privileged and removed from the situation the organization are and for this reason, have no right to assume a role in the conflict.

The problem with Wikileaks, Anonymous and the actions of a large portion of the liberal left is that their Eurocentric idealism leads them into assuming a deeply colonial role in the struggles of the oppressed. Their idea of dissent always revolves around a struggle for freedoms that are important to those who already have the means to eat, the right to self determination and a safe environment to raise their children. The idea that freedom of expression or democratic values may not be as important to oppressed nations as dealing with starvation, poverty and aerial assault is enough to confuse the champions of human rights in the west. It doesn’t fit the narrative that they are an important part of “global struggle” based on universal values rather than the beneficiaries of a neo colonial agenda that invades, occupies, props up puppet regimes and extracts resources from the majority of the world, creating their comfortable conditions where they can afford to prioritise these abstract values over human rights on the most basic levels that they take for granted.

It is time that these groups began to see themselves as beneficiaries and functionaries of empire rather than part of a romanticized movement with its roots in an age old ‘White man’s burden’. The people of oppressed nations will decide their own future and the priority of western organisations should be tackling and limiting the oppression of their own governments rather than getting carried away with colonial notions of a global struggle for human rights. The people of the oppressed nations deserve nothing less than the conditions for self determination, free from foreign interference, and until those conditions are in place, groups such as Wikileaks and Anonymous have no right to assume they can offer them more.

En los inicios de 2011, los liberales de izquierda europeos estaban en un frenesí por las revueltas de la “Primavera Arabe” que se extendían a través de la región. Los Medios de Prensa Mundiales, proveían noticias las 24 horas sobre las masivas demostraciones en la Plaza Tahrir, mientras nos decían que la gente del mundo árabe se están alzando contra la tiranía y demandando las libertades democráticas y los derechos humanos que son tan bien vistos en occidente.

Sin embargo, esta histeria tomó un giro oscuro en Febrero y Marzo de ese año cuando bandas armadas lograron tomar el control de Bengasi en Libia y todos los de FOX News lejos de ser organizaciones de izquierda inmediatamente empezaron a vitorear estos eventos como parte de una revolución progresista. En Londres, demostraciones empezaron a surgir para apoyar a estos grupos rebeldes y miembros del Partido Socialista Obrero inclusive treparon las paredes de la Embajada Libia y reemplazaron la bandera Libia con la del Rey Idris que representaba a los rebeldes de Bengasi. Es increíblemente problemático cuando organizaciones de Occidente no sólo se sienten con el derecho de inmiscuirse en desarrollos y luchas a través del tercer mundo, sino también que pueden actuar sobre ellas instintivamente y con egoísmo. Este tipo de comportamiento rara vez considera la importancia de contextualizar y toma bandos en tales conflictos dependiendo que narrativa se acopla a sus nociones románticas de “revolución global” y en que versión su nuevo rol asumido se sentirá más confortable. Wikileaks y Anonymous por ejemplo, a pesar de ser relativamente nuevas organizaciones, son meramente una  nueva forma de tal comportamiento.

El problema es que estos tipos de grupos en occidente están basados en las ideas liberales de individualismo y derechos humanos formadas en sociedades muy privilegiadas que viven en confort a las expensas de naciones oprimidas. Mientras siguen una agenda neo-colonial, países como EE.UU y el Reino Unido están permitidos mostrarse como progresistas, naciones filantrópicas llevando democracia, ayuda y derechos humanos a naciones pobres y su aparente protección y tolerancia a tales libres y democráticos valores a sus propias poblaciones solamente sirviendo para soportar tales afirmaciones.

El tipo de disidencia que estas organizaciones representan e intentan afirmar siempre están ligadas al “autoritarismo”, “liberalismo”, “libertad de expresión” y “derechos democráticos” que meramente enmarcan el asunto al extremo de que los derechos y las justicias que están en el centro de las luchas del tercer mundo son ignorados completamente. La denuncia de irregularidades en este sentido sirve al mismo propósito como publicar memorias políticas, o la ocasional auto-reflexión negativa de la prensa en eventos pasados que siempre son muy escasas y muy tarde. Ellos no tienen ninguna influencia real para hacer una diferencia política todavía sirve a las nociones de que la "disidencia" es tolerada, y publicada en el oeste.

En 2012, Wikileaks liberó 2.4 millones de correos electrónicos que mostraban la correspondencia entre figuras políticas, ministros y compañías asociadas en Siria entre 2006 y 2012. El problema con tales acciones de Wikileaks es como completamente fallaron en tomar en consideración las ya establecidas campañas de los gobiernos de occidente y de lo medios de comunicación para calumniar al gobierno de Bashar Al Assad en Siria y como esto, y podrá ser usado para apoyar y legitimar sus demandas. Cuando el país más poderoso en el mundo con las agencias de prensa más poderosas a su disposición están apuntando a Siria, calumniando a su gobierno y constantemente presionando para una “Intervención Humanitaria”, esta irresponsable falta de contextualización sólo puede servir a los enemigos de Siria.

Por ejemplo, los correos electrónicos revelan el comercio de armas entre Rusia y Siria a pesar de las sanciones impuestas por las NN.UU. (bajo presión de EE.UU.) al país. Estos documentos filtrados luego fueron utilizados por los medios de comunicación para apoyar los reclamos de Hilary Clinton contra Rusia diciendo que están bloqueando su resolución en el Consejo de Seguridad de NN.UU. al continuar vendiendo armas a Siria. Sin embargo, obviamente ninguna mención se hizo sobre las armas de alta tecnología y el apoyo que recibía el Ejercito Libre de Siria por parte de naciones de occidente o los mercenarios Saudís y de Qatar que estaban en combate, tampoco se mencionaron las reservaciones de Rusia de que el mismo escenario dejó diez mil muertos libios menos de un año atrás.

Wikileaks y Julian Assange como una figura que no es extraño al poder de la propaganda mediática, ciertamente sabía cuan convenientemente peligroso estas acciones eran para aquellos conduciendo la guerra contra Siria y esta irresponsable conducta como si los sirios están combatiendo en un juego donde Wikileaks tiene el derecho o una responsabilidad para actuar de una manera increíblemente dañina.

Similarmente esta semana, Anonymous dijeron que están llevando a cabo una Guerra Cibernética contra el gobierno de Siria en respuesta a un “cierre de internet” en el país. A pesar de que el Ministro Sirio de Información dijo que no tenían que ver con el apagón de internet, Anonymous tomó twitter y dijo “El Gobierno de Siria cortó el acceso a Internet-Anonymous entra al camino de la guerra” Empezaron a remover todas la propiedades de Internet del Gobierno Sirio que permanecían el línea y también apuntaron a dominios manejados por simpatizantes al gobierno sirio. Algunas de las compañías y organizaciones sirias que fueron atacadas por Anonymous incluían, el Ferrocarril Sirio, el Parlamento Sirio, la Televisión Siria y la embajada Siria en China. Anonymous tomó twitter otra vez inocentemente para decir “Anonymous está atacando a Assad por lo del apagón de internet. Anonymous no está atacando a Assad para apoyar al Ejercito Libre de Siria # OpSyria” [iii]

Ahora, esta de idea de poder atacar a Assad por un “apagón de internet” sin apoyar a los enemigos de Assad es casi jocoso y típico de la edad de viejas ideas liberales que su valor universal e ideas liberales de derechos humanos toman precedencia sobre la lucha misma que personas están luchando y muriendo por ella.  Esta idea de la libertad de expresión y que el tema de cortar el acceso a Internet (aunque el gobierno sirio haya negado que lo ha hecho) es más importante que contextualizar la lucha hacia un gobierno y su pueblo respondiendo a organizaciones terroristas y a mercenarios extranjeros, fundados, apoyados y armados por show foráneos que privilegiados y removidos de la situación de las organizaciones están y por esta razón no tiene el derecho de sumir un rol en el conflicto.

El problema con Wikileaks, Anonymous y las acciones de una gran parte de la izquierda liberal es que su Eurocentro idealistico les lleva a ellos a asumir un rol muy colonial en las luchas de los oprimidos. Su idea de disentir siempre se envuelve alrededor de una lucha por las libertades que son importantes para aquellos que ya tiene los medios para comer, el derecho a la autodeterminación y un ambiente seguro para criar a sus hijos.

La idea de la libertad de expresión o los valores democráticos no sean tan importantes para las naciones oprimidas como lidiar con la hambruna, la pobreza y asaltos aéreos es suficiente para confundir a los campeones de los derechos humanos en occidente. No encaja en la narrativa de que ellos son una parte importante de las “luchas sociales” basadas en valores universales sino que ellos son los beneficiarios de una agenda neo colonial que invade, ocupa, pone gobiernos títeres y extrae recursos de la mayoría del mundo, creando sus condiciones de comodidades donde pueden darse el lujo de priorizar estos valores abstractos sobre los derechos humanos en los niveles más básicos que ellos lo toman como un hecho.

Es hora de que estos grupos se vean como beneficiarios y funcionarios del imperio y no parte de un movimiento romántico con sus raíces en una época al estilo “La carga del hombre blanco”. Las personas de naciones oprimidas decidirán su propio futuro y las aspiraciones de organizaciones occidentales deberían estar limitando la opresión de sus propios gobiernos en vez de estar llevando sus nociones coloniales de una lucha global por los derechos humanos. Las personas de las naciones oprimidas se merecen no menos que la condición de autodeterminarse, libre de interferencias extranjeras, y hasta que esas condiciones no estén listas, grupos como Wikileaks y Anonymous no tienen el derecho de asumir que ellos pueden dar más.
